This is a wonderful 'starter' set for anyone curious about Allen, and a must have for any fan who doesn't already have all the titles seperately. My brief comments on the films (on a 4 star scale) Bananas (1971)***1/2 Incredibly funny, broad, slapstick, surreal political satire as Woody takes over a Latin American country to impress a girl. A few bits feel dated, and it didn't make me laugh quite as much as 'Take the Money and Run' when I recently re-watched Allen's 'early funny films', but it still has more than it's share of great comic moments. The whole trial sequence is genius worthy of the very best of the Marx Brothers. Unlike the other volumes in the series, this set doesn't contain a single bad or poor film. The only downside is that a previous, identical boxset was released but with the addition of Manhattan. This set therefore feels like it's missing something. I think the most likely reason for removing Manhattan and placing it in the Vol 2 boxset is that the rest of these films are pure comedies, whereas Manhattan is a much broodier film. Still, if you can't get hold of the older boxset, then you really should buy this one. Annie Hall is an absolute classic (Allen's best film?), and the other are highly enjoyable. Love and Death in particular took me surprise - it's fantastic. Well worth the asking price! There are 3 wonderfully animated films. The animation is so good i wouldn't have been able to tell it was form 1999, if i hadn't known! There are 3 stories: the first one being about Donald, Huey,Dewie and Louie. This is my personal favourite, but it is just as good as the other two stories: A very Goofy Christmas: the tale of when Max and Goofy celebrate Christmas, form the main bulk of the film lasting about 23 mins. The final story is a Disney re-make of the Gift of the Magi, starring Mickey and Minnie Mouse. All the stories are wonderful to watch and are such great entertainment. It only deserved to be sequelled because of it's sheer brilliance. Though sadly my one complaint of the Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas DVD is there are no extras, though this does not affect my opinion and so for me Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas deserves a minimum of 4 stars. I think if one thing stands out it is the sheer melodic brilliance of Paul McCartney whose songwriting is at an absolute peak throughout. 'Here There And Everywhere' is just about his most affecting ballad, even perhaps topping 'Yesterday' from the previous year. The melody is made in Heaven and I don't use that word lightly. 'For No One' is a masterpiece with its descending chord sequence and beguiling melody. And this is from a man with no classical music training! And if that wasn't enough we have 'Eleanor Rigby'. No wonder Lennon was effusive in his praise of his partner on this album. The standard of these three songs is so high it's not even funny. McCartney would reach these heights in later years but when you've reached this level it is hard to equal. Here on this album his touch is one of sheer genius. Pepper" - which for at least two decades after was considered the Beatles, and even rock music's finest hour - time has shown "Revolver" not only to be a better but much more pivotal work. Why? Well caught, in early 1966, between a global audience who simply wanted more of their peerlessly tuneful "pop" songs, and a musical mind-set that was a million miles away from where they'd been only a year or so before, the Beatles pulled off the extraordinary feat of pushing rock music's boundaries out to the edge while showing that musical innovation could still be integrated into a satisfying melodic framework.
