Not the egregious foul it seemed to be in cinemas, Hercules stands up as an entertaining spritzer of an animated feature. The continual peppering of in-jokes and cultural references becomes less irksome on video. That there's no majesty or awe invested in the beloved Greek legends also seems less of an error. It conjures up the spirit of the time, if you are young then it's a good fun film which will give some idea of what brought about the sixties radio revolution in the UK. Great sixties rock music features throughout.There are parallels with events that happened to Radio Caroline. It's the possible next step for anyone who got into John Grant's album of last year. Different dude, different voice, different topics (generally) but his songs take you to secret places in the same way Grant did.I note that another reviewer here said there was nothing "groundbreaking" here. That's true, in the sense that you could draw a line of influence from Vile to many other singer songwriters of, say, the early 1970s. I'd name Michael Chapman, Bill Fay, a bit of Terry Reid and a dash of Nick Drake... others will hear their own reference points. Having said that, I have no idea whether Vile has heard any of those artists. The bottom line is this.. Vile's offhand and potent lyrics are all the more powerful for sounding so completely closed off from the world.The first few opening seconds of 'Runner-Ups' is so beautiful that I can usually feel my tear ducts expanding as soon as the guitar rhythm kicks in. Elsewhere I'm similarly overwhelmed by 'Baby's Arms', when Vile sings '...'cause I will never, ever be alone', and yet the way he intones his voice suggests optimism but also an ambiguity that is heartbreaking. This is a down-and-out kind of album that is utterly consumed by its own feelings of insignificance, emerging cocoon-like from headphones or hi-fi's with so much empathy and disaffection that I can't quite stomach up the adequate hyperbole to vent how wonderful I think this music is. |

Several posts have claimed this is not the case but all of the 30 discs on this wonderful collection have been restored to an amazing point. Maybe our reveiwers are wanting 5.1 DTS and Lucasfilm to digitally enhance them all but that just isn't going to happen! What you do get though is a beautifully presented and well thought out collection of the Carry On movies.All 30 films appear here (actually there are 31 but who really classes Columbus as a Carry on anyway?) On each disc is a good collection of extras including the Carry On Laughing series that aired during the 70's (It is worth saying that they weren't a patch on the movies but still worth a look.) A Commentary from various members of the cast (albeit secondary cast memebers but, still, you learn a lot more about the workings of a carry on movie than you thought you ever would) a series of production stills and publicity shots... What a lovely present on Christmas morning it was and I've spent most of the holiday period watching the films in order, I'm up to Spying now. The quality is amazing and it's like rediscovering these classic anew, the sound has been dramatically improved and the picture is top notch. I even bought a DVD player that would play region 2 format just so I could see all of these classics. There may be some sense to having multiple regions for new releases, but why are classics like these region controlled? The packaging is a good news/bad news kind of deal. Instead of thirty separate cases, they come in three cases that hold ten discs each, thus saving space on your shelf. However, the cases are rather flimsy and there is no liner notes or any details about the discs other than the title. The extras are not identified so if you were looking for something particular, you'd have to check out all 30 discs to find it.I haven't watched them all yet but I was pleased with the quality of the transfer and my wife and I look forward to indulging ourselves as we watch the whole series,...
