I have always liked the Keys, some of their songs are fantastic 3 minute riffed-out stompers, but albumwhise they have never been on heavy rotation. This however, is pure class and gonna stick for a looong time. The R&B and soul influences are more significant on Brothers than on anything they have done before, and I see some Black Keys fans think this is too soft compared to their older stuff (The most entertaining remark being; " there is NO excuse for falsetto, this is not The Bee Gees"!! HA HA HA!), but I just don't get the criticism. It's not like they have gone in a completely new direction. "You're the one" from "Magic Potion" is very similar to the more mellow stuff on "Brothers" This is a GREAT album and there is no mistaking it for anything else than the Black Keys. It's like saying the Kraftwerk are the same as the Beatles as they had 4 members in the line up.The Keys are a wondrous mixture of low key soul, old style rhythm and blues and garage rock, but in a softer classier way that Jack Whites fantatsic two piece. This is their 6th album, the follow up to the equally untouchable Attack and Release and features more of the same, except with a kind of lower key more acoustic, natural feel. As you'd gather from the 5 star review, the songs are classy from beginning to end with no dud moments. My favourite is their cover of Never Gonna Give You Up, which is pure beauty and is stuck on repeat on my stereo. This will be in my albums of the year. This album is incredible, with influences spanning all the genres, but taking a great deal from the punk/rock scene of the Black Keys home town of Ohio. Each track is unique and will stick in your head for hours, constantly replaying each song 5 times seems to be normal. From the chilled out Sunday afternoon vibe of 'Unknown Brother' and 'Never Going to Give You Up' to the heavy guitar of 'She's Long Gone' and drums of 'Everlasting Light'. This album is for anybody I would claim, you will enjoy it and will be a welcome addition to your library. |
